This is an example of the power of simple molecular turnover, which correlates directly with
telomere length. Cells are constanly turning over molecules within the cell and molecules are
constantly incurring damage. As telomeres shorten, the turnover rate gradually decreases and
the damage rate gradually increases. As telomere lengths become critical, buildup of tangled
tau proteins occurs, toxic cytokines proliferate, and unchecked free radicals accelerate
cellular decline. However, when telomeres are re-lenghtened, the intra-cellular environment
rapidly returns to normal simply through increased molecular turnover.
